The Future of Higher Education in Pakistan

APF is hosting a webinar that will discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with the higher education space in Pakistan, and address the potential for international academic collaboration.

Joining the discussion will be Dr. Arshad Ahmad, the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the Lahore University of Management Sciences; Dr. Samina Qadir, the former VC of Fatima Jinnah University; and Dr. Sohail Naqvi, the VC of the Agha Khan Foundation's Central Asia University. APF President's Circle member and University of Delaware professor Dr. Saleem H. Ali will moderate the discussion.

Speakers

Dr. Samina Qadir has served as a Vice-Chancellor, Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi, Pakistan. As chief academic officer of the University, she was responsible for policy development geared towards advancing the University's academic and research profile. She holds a Master’s in English Literature from the University of the Punjab; M. Ed. in TEFL from University of Wales College of Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom (UK) and PhD in Linguistics from Lancaster University, UK. She has been published extensively in a number of internationally recognized journals. She has also been a member of numerous social welfare organizations of Pakistan including SOS Village, PATTAN Development Organization and Society for the Advancement of Education (SAHE) etc.

Dr. Arshad Ahmad currently serves as Vice Chancellor LUMS, prior to which he was Vice Provost, Teaching and Learning, and Director of the MacPherson Institute at McMaster University in Canada. He is also Chair of Teaching and Learning Canada, former President of Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and former Vice President of International Consortium of Educational Developers. Dr. Ahmad completed his MBA and later PhD in Educational Psychology at McGill University, won a lifetime 3M National Teaching Fellowship in 1992 and was a professor of finance at Concordia and McMaster Universities. His research interests are in student evaluations of teaching, approaches to teaching, teaching philosophies and student partnerships.

Dr. Sohail Naqvi joined as the founding Rector of the University of Central Asia in August 2018, upon completion of five years as Vice Chancellor of the Lahore University of Management Sciences. Under his tenure, LUMS' QS Asian University Ranking increased exponentially. Prior to LUMS he was the Executive Director of the Higher Education Commission for eight years, where he oversaw implementation of an ambitious portfolio of programs. He has extensive teaching, research and entrepreneurial experience in the U.S. and Pakistan, and has been a consultant on higher education for the Asian Development Bank and World Bank. He was awarded Order of the ‘Palmes Académiques’ with rank of Chevalier, by the French Government, and the Sitar-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan for his services to higher education. Dr. Naqvi holds an MSc and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University.

Saleem Ali is Blue and Gold Distinguished Professor of Energy and the Environment with joint appointments in the Department of Geography and the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy. He specializes in environmental conflict resolution, particularly related to management and conservation of minerals. Dr. Ali previously served as chair in Sustainable Resource Development and professor of sustainability science and policy at University of Queensland in Australia. Some of Dr. Ali’s former research appointments include a visiting fellowship at the Brookings Institution's research center in Doha, Qatar; a Public Policy Fellowship at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, a Baker Foundation Research Fellowship at Harvard Business School and a parliamentary internship at the U.K. House of Commons.
